La "Playfair" è un brigantino canadese di proprietà della "Toronto Brigantine Inc.", una associazione benefica fondata dai coniugi Mary e Garfield Lorriman, nel 1960, dopo aver visto un film sulla Christian Radich.
La barca, disegnata da Francis A. MacLachlan, è stata costruita nei Cantieri "Canada Dredge and Dock Co." nel 1973;lo scafo metallico ha un dislocamento di 50 ton, per una lunghezza di 20 m (22 m fuori tutto) ed una larghezza di 4,5 m, con un pescaggio di 2,5 m. Provvista di albero di maestra (16,5 m) ed albero di trinchetto (16m), dispiega una superficie velica di 250 mq, che le permettono di tenere gli 8 nodi; il motore ausiliario (Detroit Diesel 3-71) ha una potenza di 110 hp.
Il brigantino è stato varato nel 1974, madrina la Regina Elisabetta II di Gran Bretagna.
Da allora veleggia sui Grandi Laghi, con 10 persone di equipaggio più 18 ragazzi, partecipanti ai corsi di vela

Playfair is a Canadian Brigantine, owned by the "Toronto Brigantine Inc.", a charitable organisation founded in 1960 by Mary and Garfield Lorriman, inspired by the viewing of a movie on the Christian Radich.
The ship , designed by Francis A. MacLachlan, has been built in the shipyard of "Canada Dredge and Dock Co." nel 1973; the welded steel hull has a displacement of 50 ton, a lenght ot 66' (overall 72'), with 15' beam and a draft of 8'. Provided with mainmast and foremast, it has a sail surface of 2,600 sq. ft., which allow the ship to attain 8 knots; the auxiliary diesel engine (Detroit Diesel 3-71) has 110 hp.
She was commissioned by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1974, and remains the only Canadian ship to be commissioned by a reigning monarch.
Since then Playfair is sailing on the Great Lakes, with a 10 people crew and up to 18 trainees, boys from 12 to 18 years old ...
